4 Reasons Why I Went Dairy Free

Hi there!

During my family's journey to take this idea from a thought to a concrete business, I've been asked the same question over and over again: why dairy free?

Well there were several reasons why we decided to do that, the most obvious being that my mother, sister and myself share the unfortunate reality of lactose intolerance. So back in 2014, we decided to abandon the dairy ship for good. It was quite the battle, but in the end it was worth it. Looking back, I realized that there were so many benefits to giving up dairy and it has truly changed my life for the better.

1. Clear Skin

The medical community has not come to a complete consensus on whether dairy is a major contributor to acne. However, more studies are showing that there may be a correlation between acne and dairy consumption. While this is not the case for everyone, I can speak for myself when I say that dairy was the gasoline to my acne match. Once I stopped consuming dairy, my troubled skin (which I dealt with for 3 years at that point) cleared up! I was able to reduce my Tretinoin medication from 6 days per week down to 1-2 per week.

2. Weight Loss

When I started my dairy free lifestyle, I weighed 218 pounds. Now I'm not saying that dairy was behind my obesity That had to due with unrelated factors like anxiety and depression. However, I will say that my favorite foods always contained dairy like creamy pastas and pizza. After 4 years of being dairy free, I'm down to a healthy weight of 168. I can honestly say that if I never went down the dairy free route, I would've never explored the beauty of an overall healthy lifestyle.

3. Energy

Okay, so for those who know me, I like to joke around that I love nothing more than to sleep (which is 85% truth lol). However, at one point in my life during my unhealthy phase, I had no energy. Sleeping and lagging around my couch was practically a necessity. I had no energy to work out and do things that I loved because of the foods I was putting into my body. Even now, I notice when I have a slip up and consume a treat that has dairy (usually I've skipped looking at the ingredients list and pay the price later), I feel very sluggish. That may not apply to all folks, but I noticed that my body function at it's best when I don't have it.

4. The Cows!

I'm a sucker for cows. They are absolutely adorable and it breaks my heart to know that a calf may be separated from it's mom simply for my enjoyment. So during that same time, I also gave up beef and eventually pork too. The next step would be to give up chicken and turkey...which is proving harder than I thought. But slow and steady steps until I get to the golden status of vegan.

Being dairy-free has completely changed my life. It was the gateway to me changing my life physically, mentally and emotionally. It taught me about restraint, willpower and my ability to set goals for myself and reach them including establishing this business. I feel like I've reached a different level of self discipline and it will only get better from here.
